legendary monster snapjaw

i am almost finished fighting snapjaw but i've checked and even if i role high the round i defeat it i will also be strangled by the vines but if i kill the monster will the vines still kill me

Passive damage takes place at the end of the combat round. So if you kill the monster beforehand (through your damage roll) then the creature is dead (this occurs before passive damage is counted).
If, however, it is the end of the round and your passive damage kills the monster (perhaps through bleed or venom) you would still die as passive damage takes place at the same time, so snapjaw's stranglevines would also count.
