  • Using abilities in special types of combat. Konga and his boulders.

So I am fighting Konga in book 2 act 1 where you have to dodge 3 boulders to be able to inflict damage then rinse and repeat. Can you use abilities like Charm for example to help you dodge the boulders and does this apply to their unique types of battle like this. I guess I am picturing something in my head whereby your charm dazzles or muddles the mind so the accuracy of the boulder throw is off making it easier to dodge.

To add to this further I also feel like I should be able to use prophecy to forsee a boulders path to dodge it which in turn can help me not break the triple dodge chain once to reach Konga and get to roll for damage. It's only like my third quest and I am doing in difficulty order so I don't have many skills but I would imagine other abilities which I don't have personally could have theamatical logicness in being applied for this type of combat like dodge and feint for example. Or if I had one I feel like I could drink a potion of speed or something similar to dodge one of the boulders.

I am going to do it this way as it is insane trying to roll 3 times successfully with the speed at my disposal currently and I have prioritised it on every award available I came across.

It would be awesome to get confirmation though as it triggers my OCD and I am sure there will be other fights I think like this. It does say it is combat and I am not rolling for a speed check so I think my reasoning/thought process is correct ! The only special rule it tells me is that I can't apply bleed effects.

    Hi Antfunk

    Thanks for joining the forums.

Yes, this example is a bit of a grey area as it has combat mechanics that are outside of the norm.

In this case, based on the description of charm, I would be okay to rule that charm can be used, as the dice you are rolling are for your hero and you are 'in combat'.

Prophecy would not be applicable, as you use that to avoid taking damage from an opponent's 'damage score'.

Hope this helps you to dodge those boulders!

In Book Four I may be tightening up some descriptions of various abilities, charm included.

Awesome, thank you for coming back to me so quickly as I have kind of paused my playthrough whilst searching for an answer ! Excited for a book 4 kickstarter! I do have the first book but could not find it when I searched last night so have jumped straight into book 2. I did just notice that there is something called Destiny Quest Infinite which is the first book. Off topic now but do all 3 books link dramatically? The only thing I spotted so far is that Tithebury is mentioned but obviously I am only at the start of the book. I'm going to go and buy Destiny Quest Infinity now anyway and am hoping that it is much more bug free as it's been out for a while!

I try and write each book as its own standalone adventure, but the books do also link thematically - so there is an overarching plot that is being told, and future books do reference events and characters from previous books. But I don't think playing them out of order would necessarily ruin the experience.

Yes, DestinyQuest Infinite is the app version of Book One, The Legion of Shadow and is available here:

Good luck! And if you enjoy the books, would be great if you can pop a review on amazon to share your opinions.

I think you should be able to use a potion that boost your speed to dodge the boulder, even if it seemed technically against how it should be used, because it's still combat. There were times in Book One when I need to pass a Brawn test when it was low because I was already focusing on Magic. But I didn't use my +2 Brawn potion, since it wasn't combat.

Speed potions are pretty valuable, since you can use them at any time and thus save it when it turns a loss to a win. When I first played, I thought you had to decide to use a Speed potion/item at the start of the round before you rolled for Speed, like for a Speed ability. But on these forums, I found you can use them any time like Modifier abilities, though only one backpack item per combat round.
